Virtual - Racial Justice Series: Reparations for African Americans: Compensatory Justice for Unjust Takings

June 13, 2022 @ 6:30 pm 7:30 pm

On Monday, June 13, join us for the next conversation in our racial justice series entitled, "Reparations for African Americans: Compensatory Justice for Unjust Takings" with Dr. Eric Smaw, professor of philosophy at Rollins College in Winter Park.

Racial wealth disparities reveal fallacies in the American Dream. The financial and social consequences are significant and wide-ranging. Wealth is positively correlated with better health, educational and economic outcomes. Reparations could offer wealth-building opportunities that address racial disparities in education, housing, and business ownership. Dr. Smaw will address the glaring inequities in economic opportunities today and how reparations could help bridge the gap.

Dr. Eric Smaw is a professor of philosophy at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He received his PhD in philosophy of law and medical ethics from the University of Kentucky in 2006, after which he pursued post-Doctoral studies in international human rights at the University of Massachusetts. In addition to his professorship at Rollins College, Dr. Smaw works as a clinical ethicist at Florida State University, and he is the national board representative for the ACLU of Florida. He has authored numerous publications on race, human rights, terrorism, international law, and medical ethics.

We hope you can join us for this important conversation. RSVP if you can make it.
