Call for Equitable Treatment: Enhancing Support for Transgender Individuals in Florida Jails

In 2023, the ACLU of Florida submitted public-records requests to all sixty-seven (67) county jails in Florida requesting their policies and procedures concerning gender-affirming care for transgender individuals in their custody. We received responses from more than half of the facilities.

Informed by our records requests, community engagement, and discussions with advocacy groups serving justice-impacted LGBTQ+ individuals, we sent a letter to all Florida sheriffs urging them to adopt formal policies to comply with federal law and providing them with recommendations to support transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex persons in their custody. A copy of the letter can be found here and below.
