Wilson v. Pinellas County Schools

In September 2013, we filed an administrative complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights on behalf of a transgender woman whose rights under Title IX were being denied by her educational institution. Alex Wilson was a 25-year-old nursing student at the Clearwater campus of the Pinellas Technical Education Centers (PTEC), a post-secondary institution that is part of Pinellas County Schools. From November 2012 to July 2013, Alex used the women’s restrooms at PTEC. When administrators found out in July 2013 that Alex was transgender, Alex was told to use a restroom in the “storage area” of another building or to use the faculty men’s room. She was told that if she used either the general men’s or women’s restrooms on campus that she would have charges pressed against her. As a result of our complaint, and following mediation, PTEC ultimately agreed to treat Alex as female for all purposes.
