TAMPA, Fla. – State and local experts will speak in support of proposed Amendments 5 & 6 at the Clearwater Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, October 9 at 11:00 a.m. Speakers include Retired Col. Mike Pheneger, President of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida; Amala M. Abdur-Rahman from the Center for American Islamic Relations (CAIR); Tim Heberlain from Florida Consumer Action Network (FCAN); Edwin Enciso from Democracia Ahora; Leon Russell from National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Aaron Carmella from the West Florida Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO); and Marti Folwell from the North Pinellas League of Women Voters.

After every census, Florida legislators draw new Congressional and Florida Legislative districts. The only legal standard to guide legislators is a federal mandate that districts must be roughly equal in population. Currently, incumbent politicians of both parties draw districts designed to ensure their re-election and the long-term interest of their party—not districts drawn to serve the interests of Florida communities. Many national experts believe that Florida stands to gain Congressional seats, making this an important year to set redistricting rules.

Join us Saturday, October 9 to learn how Fair Districts Amendments 5 & 6 will end gerrymandering and create positive change for Florida elections.
