The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy 501(c)(4) organization and freedom's watchdog in the Sunshine State.
Florida's 2022 legislative session officially begins January 11, 2022, and ends sixty-days later on March 11, 2022. During this legislative session, we will work on a broad range of issues including, but not limited to: criminal justice reform, voting rights, immigrants’ rights, reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and free speech.
Each year, ACLU-FL reviews over 3,000 bills introduced in the Florida Legislature for civil liberties implications, identifying those bills that we are going to advocate for or against and developing strategies accordingly.
We educate legislators and the public about ACLU positions, draft legislation on priority issues, lobby on bills affecting civil liberties, testify or arrange for testimony on bills, and build coalitions to pursue pro-active legislative initiatives or battle anti-civil liberties legislation. In addition, Florida legislators and their staff often ask us for analysis on pending bills.

We are monitoring hundreds of bills that span the breadth of the ACLU’s policy concerns. Below are just a few of the many priority bills that we will be actively working on throughout this legislative session.
Bans abortions after 15 weeks. Access to abortion is essential to a person’s liberty and self-determination. The majority of Floridians support Roe and believe that pregnant people should be able to determine for themselves whether and when to have a child.
HB 1557/SB 1834 is a government censorship bill that would ban classroom discussions related to sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. It would silence students from speaking about their LGBTQ+ family members, friends, neighbors, and icons.
Criminalizes bystanders who film or stand within 30 feet of police officers engaging in excessive use of force and thus makes it harder to hold bad actors accountable by ensuring there is no eyewitness or video evidence.
SB148 / HB7 would censor protected speech in workplaces and classrooms by banning teaching about systemic racism and gender and race discrimination. It also removes instruction on mental and emotional health from our schools.
Prohibiting contracts with private entities and charitable nonprofits that provide transportation to immigrant children and adults, precluding them from being reunited with family.
Joint Resolution thwarting the will of the people by making it harder for Floridians to pass constitutional amendments safeguarding our basic liberties (voting access, public education, health care, reduction of poverty, employment opportunities, and environmental protections).
