In 1787, the Constitution considered Black people as three-fifths of a human being. Blacks voting was not an issue. Then the Civil War ended and Black men were elected to public office and gained property ownership rights during Reconstruction. America responded with Jim Crow.
In cities around Florida, people who benefited from the passage of Amendment 4 in the November elections are finding envelopes in their mailboxes bearing their spanking new voter identification cards.
Voters chose to expand voting rights in several states during the 2018 midterm elections. Many lawmakers in those states, including here in Florida, are now working to curtail the wishes of voters.
This week’s midterms should send a strong message to the political establishment that when our civil rights and civil liberties are on the line, American voters will step in.
“I am especially concerned for the thousands of Florida veterans who have lost their voting privileges. Today our military services are an all-volunteer force. Our veterans have made a commitment to risk their lives to preserve our freedoms and our democracy.”
Florida prosecutes more kids as adults than any other state. We must reform the process by which we are giving up on these kids.
Taxation without representation was wrong 240 years go; it is still wrong today. Do the right thing. In November, vote “YES” on Amendment 4.
The ability to vote is not, and should never be, a partisan issue.
Voters should not have to risk their lives in order to register to vote. Yet, in Florida, that's exactly the position that the state has chosen to put tens of thousands of people in.
