ABOUT US:

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Florida (ACLU of Florida) seeks a Senior Digital Strategist to support the Communications Department, grow our organizational reach, and mobilize support to advance the civil rights and civil liberties that define our democracy. This is a remote position and includes some travel. All candidates must reside in Florida.

The ACLU of Florida is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights. For over 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation’s primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy. The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliate entities such as the ACLU of Florida.

The ACLU of Florida, the state’s largest civil rights and civil liberties organization, employs litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, such as freedom of speech, racial justice, right to privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and immigrants’ rights. The ACLU of Florida litigates a broad range of complex constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, filing amicus briefs, and submitting administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Digital Strategist is a senior-level leader within the ACLU of Florida’s Communications Department, responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization’s digital presence, audience development, and public engagement. Reporting to the Communications Director or Deputy Communications Director, this role goes beyond content production – it shapes how the ACLU of Florida shows up digitally, builds power online, and mobilizes communities in defense of civil rights and civil liberties.

This position carries broad organizational responsibility: setting digital priorities, establishing standards and workflows, providing strategic guidance and quality oversight to digital staff, and serving as a subject matter expert across campaigns, departments, and affiliate partnerships. The Senior Digital Strategist translates organizational goals into integrated, data-informed digital strategies – and is accountable for their performance and impact.

This position operates with significant autonomy, exercises independent judgment on complex digital matters, and is expected to proactively identify opportunities, solve problems, and lead without waiting for direction. Guidance is sought only on matters of exceptional sensitivity or organizational significance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set and drive the organization’s overarching digital strategy, ensuring all digital content, campaigns, and platforms are aligned with organizational priorities, advocacy goals, and brand standards.
  • Provide strategic direction, quality oversight, and guidance to digital communications staff, including the Digital Strategist – reviewing work product, ensuring consistency, and supporting professional development.
  • Lead integrated digital campaign planning across issue areas – including voting rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, and First Amendment – coordinating with legal, policy, and advocacy teams to ensure timely, accurate, and mission-driven digital execution.
  • Oversee the development and management of the organization’s social media content calendar, email communications, web content, petitions, and digital action campaigns, maintaining a high standard of voice, accuracy, and impact.
  • Establish and refine digital workflows, content standards, and best practices that support consistency, efficiency, and scalability across the Communications Department.
  • Own the organization’s digital performance framework – setting KPIs, analyzing platform metrics, and delivering strategic recommendations to Communications leadership through monthly reports and campaign debriefs.
  • Identify and lead high-impact audience growth initiatives to expand email subscriber lists, social media reach, and digital engagement in alignment with campaign and organizational goals.
  • Serve as the department’s lead on emerging digital trends, tools, and platform shifts – advising leadership and staff on adoption decisions and strategic implications.
  • Manage and update the organization’s website and content management systems, ensuring content accuracy, functionality, and strategic alignment with current campaigns and advocacy efforts.
  • Draft, vet, and build digital actions such as petitions and online forms in coordination with internal staff and partner organizations, maintaining rigorous data privacy standards throughout.
  • Manage the organization’s digital asset library, ensuring resources – including images, graphics, video, audio, and templates – are current, well-organized, and accessible to staff.
  • Represent the Communications Department in cross-departmental planning efforts and national ACLU affiliate convenings, contributing digital expertise to shared campaigns and coalition work.
  • Lead other communications projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Communications Director or Deputy Communications Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Senior Digital Strategist provides direct oversight and strategic guidance to the Digital Strategist, including reviewing work product, ensuring quality and consistency across digital outputs, and supporting the professional growth and development of digital communications staff. This position does not carry formal personnel management authority but is expected to function as a senior lead within the digital communications team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, media studies, digital media, computer technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in digital media strategy, content development, and campaign management -- with at least two (2) years in a senior, lead, or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience setting digital strategy and overseeing the work of digital communications staff or contractors in a nonprofit, advocacy, or agency environment.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a proven ability to translate complex legal and policy issues into clear, compelling, audience-specific digital content.
  • Advanced proficiency with content management systems, social media platforms, email marketing and advocacy tools, and digital design software.
  • Experience building and managing digital performance frameworks, including setting KPIs, interpreting analytics, and translating data into actionable strategy.
  • Familiarity with HTML; experience with CRM or advocacy management platforms preferred.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead multiple concurrent initiatives, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced advocacy environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners, and to build effective working relationships across diverse communities and constituencies.
  • Oral and written fluency in English required; bilingual proficiency (particularly Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Unwavering commitment to the mission of the ACLU, including a demonstrated commitment to equity, racial justice, and the full protection of civil liberties.
