MIAMI – The U.S. District Court Judge Patricia Seitz has struck down Florida’s Travel Act—the state legislature’s effort to ban academic research in countries labeled as terrorist states by the U.S. State Department, including Cuba.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida filed the lawsuit in June 2006 on behalf of Florida International University’s (FIU) Faculty Senate and six professors at several Florida universities challenging the ban enacted by the legislature in the 2006 Legislative Session. The legislation was principally sponsored by Miami State House of Representative David Rivera.

The ACLU will hold a press conference today, Friday, August 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM to respond to the Court’s decision.
