FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 5, 2015

Today, 13,905 petition signatures were delivered to Florida Governor Rick Scott calling for a veto on HB 633, a bill that would impose a mandatory 24 hour delay on a woman seeking an abortion. The signatures were collected by ACLU of Florida, CREDO Action and the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates.

“Whether or not to have an abortion is an important decision that should be made between a woman and her doctor without interference from politicians,” wrote ACLU of Florida Director of Public Policy Michelle Richardson in an email to the governor forwarding the petitions collected by the three groups. “State laws, like these bills, that require mandatory delays before a woman can get an abortion do not offer any health benefits. They result in increased expenses, travel difficulties, and medical risks. They unnecessarily postpone the procedure even when a woman has already received state-mandated counseling and made a deliberate and fully informed decision.”
