Protect people in jails and prisons from COVID-19

People in prisons and jails are highly vulnerable to outbreaks of contagious illnesses like COVID-19. They are packed together in close quarters with little control over their daily interactions with others, and are often in poor health.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION: Tell Gov. Ron DeSantis to take action right now to protect people who are incarcerated from COVID-19.

I am writing to urge you to take action to protect the lives of people in jails and prisons during the coronavirus pandemic.
Public health officials have been sounding the alarm about the threat COVID-19 poses to incarcerated people and staff in correctional facilities. People in prisons and jails are highly vulnerable to outbreaks of contagious illnesses like COVID-19. They are packed together in close quarters with little control over their daily interactions with others, and are often in poor health. People in prisons and jails cannot socially-distance themselves or take the necessary precautions needed to keep themselves healthy and safe.

Florida must dramatically reduce its incarcerated population, limit new admissions into jails and prisons, and take active steps to reduce the risk to any individuals who remain incarcerated.

We are urging you to safely release people in prisons and jails who do not need to be there (e.g., those who do not pose an immediate and direct threat to public safety), prioritizing:

- People with underlying health conditions
- People 55 and over
- People detained for administrative reasons (including technical violations of parole)
- People who are detained pre-trial because they cannot afford bail (who are legally innocent)
- People serving a sentence who are slated for release within the next year
- People who are parole eligible

You should also direct authorities to limit new admissions to jails and prisons to only those necessary for public safety.
I’m counting on you to take these proactive steps that will limit the spread of COVID-19 in jails and prisons. If you take these actions right now, we could save thousands of lives in Florida.

Sincerely,
