MIAMI, FL – The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida today announced the hire of Daniel Tilley as legal director. Tilley will lead the organization’s litigation work and direct a staff of lawyers who maintain a large and active docket of civil liberties cases in Florida. Those cases cover a broad range of issues, including immigrant’s rights, voting rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and bail reform.

“We couldn’t be prouder to have Daniel lead our legal team,” said Micah Kubic, ACLU of Florida executive director. “With his passion and dedication for justice and equality, he has cultivated an impressive career, which includes some of the greatest civil rights victories our state has seen in recent times. During a time when our state is facing repeated threats to our constitutional rights, we are confident that with Daniel’s leadership we will continue to successfully defend the rights of all Floridians.”

Tilley joined the organization in 2012 as a staff attorney whose work primarily focused on the LGBTQ community. Among his other work, he served as lead counsel in the ACLU’s federal-court litigation that, as part of a pair of consolidated cases and a team of lawyers, brought marriage equality to Florida in January 2015. Daniel studied classical piano and German language and literature at New York University before returning to his home state for law school at the University of Georgia.

“I am excited to hit the ground running to protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights during this particularly critical moment in our state and our nation’s history,” Tilley said. “I look forward to partnering with people from across the political spectrum to advance policies that protect the rights of all Floridians.”

During law school, Daniel received the Spurgeon Public Interest Fellowship, was a member of the Georgia Law Review and the Order of the Coif, and interned in Arusha, Tanzania at the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Before joining the ACLU, Daniel clerked in Atlanta at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. While in D.C., he served on the D.C. Lawyer Chapter board of the American Constitution Society.
