Every twenty years, the Florida Constitutional Revision Commission is appointed to examine the Florida Constitution, hold public hearings, and possibly recommend changes to the Florida Constitution for voter consideration. The Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) is a group of 37 people appointed to review and recommend changes to the Florida Constitution.

This year, CRC Chairman Carlos Beruff announced a statewide “Floridians Speak, We Listen” Tour to learn about the issues important to Florida families, and as an effort to amend the state constitution.

Critical civil liberties issues — including, reproductive rights, privacy, LGBT rights, voting rights, and immigrants' rights — could be at stake during a constitutional revision, which is why we’re calling on ACLU supporters  to show up for these meetings. These proposals could go straight to the 2018 ballot and we need to make sure our voices are heard on these issues.

We are calling for the commission to strive for these goals:

  • Preserve the right to privacy in Florida.
  • Restore voting rights for certain former inmates who have satisfied the conditions of their sentences.
  • Maintain fair voting districts for Floridians.
  • Protect the independence of Florida’s judiciary and maintain the system of checks and balances that protects Florida’s citizen’s and ensures a strong democracy.
  • Preserve the requirement that the state not fund churches or religious sects (the ‘no aid’ provision).
  • Preserve a strong public school system for all Florida students.

This is an amazing opportunity to be a part of Florida’s history and to experience another part of our political/constitutional process. Thank you for being a part of it.
