Newman authored "Hugo Black: A Biography," which won the Scribes Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and co-authored of "Banned Films: Movies, Censors and the First Amendment." He also was editor-in-chief of "The Constitution and Its Amendments," and editor of the Yale Biographical Dictionary of American Law. Newman taught at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Hofstra Law School, was a Research Scholar at New York University Law School and received a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has also lectured extensively across the United States and has appeared on NPR, PBS and Entertainment Tonight.
