Nestor Ortiz has been involved in youth and community development work for more than 25 years, serving in various leadership roles throughout the nonprofit sector. Serving as a community development consultant for 15 of those 25 years, Nestor has worked with community agencies all over the US with a focus on the Tampa Bay area, assisting agencies in creating and developing their own high-quality community-based initiatives. He continues to advocate for, on behalf of and with a variety of vulnerable communities through his participation in various agencies, associations, coalitions, grassroots movements and community initiatives that are actively advancing these communities in positive, pragmatic, and systemic ways.
In 2018 Nestor founded 16 Point Compass Consulting, LLC, a firm that supports companies, NGOs and other agencies in building bridges of understanding and support internally among staff, externally among communities and supporting the success of others through individual coaching, workshops and leadership development. Nestor is also the founder of #WorkingintheGrey, a grassroots movement challenging people to see passed the political black and white lines that polarize our communities and begin “working in the grey” together. Nestor is also the host of Duality of Sorts, a web-based video series that explores various topics in social justice, politics, and culture. He also serves as the co-host of the weekly radio show, “the Urban Café” on Sunday mornings on local Tampa Bay radio station WMNF 88.5.
Nestor previously served as the Chair of the Hillsborough County Diversity Advisory Council and is a New Leaders Council Alumni, Tampa Bay class of 2017. Mr. Ortiz is a member and/or active supporter of several organizations including Organize Florida, Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, NAACP, Black Lives Matter – Tampa, City of Tampa Mayor’s Task Force on Policing among many others. Nestor continues to be politically active, supporting local, statewide, and national campaigns and politicians that support historically marginalized communities and continues speak on various panels and at local and national conferences.
Mr. Ortiz holds a Bachelor of Science in Community Leadership from Springfield College as well as numerous certifications in diversity and inclusion work, youth development and relationship building. Nestor in is an avid outdoor adventurer and furniture building enthusiast and started his eco-sustainable building company, odom705 exteriors, interiors and furnishings in 2018. Among all his accomplishments, experiences and roles however, his most important role by far is that of being Dad of two hilarious and compassionate teenage boys. Nestor’s pronouns are he, him and his and the most important word to him is “integrity.”
