Student Internships
The ACLU of Florida offers students a chance to learn about and work hands-on for the Bill of Rights in its extensive Student Internship Program. The program is based in the state office in Miami, but any students who cannot work in Miami may be interested in volunteering with one of our local chapters.
What Will I do as an Intern?
Interns serve as the ACLU's "screening committee," handling both telephone and written requests for help. The ACLU receives hundreds of calls and letters every week from individuals requesting assistance for legal problems ranging from discrimination in the workplace to excessive use of police force and everything in between. Interns summarize these requests and help decide whether they contain a constitutional issue and whether the ACLU should become involved.
Do I Need Any Experience to be an ACLU Intern?
Interns need no experience to work at the ACLU, only an enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn. Interns are fully trained in how to recognize constitutional issues in order to carry out their internship duties.
What About Scheduling?
ACLU interns make their own schedules and there is no minimum requirement of hours. The ACLU office is located at 45th Street and Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. Office hours are 9-5, Monday through Friday, and interns pick their weekly hours within this time slot. The ACLU office is a relaxed and friendly environment, and there is no dress code. There is also no limit on how long you can intern with the ACLU.
Can I Get Credit for Interning?
The ACLU will work with your school if you need this internship for academic credit. Simply talk with your school and bring us the necessary paperwork; we will cooperate fully.
What Majors Can Intern?
An internship with the ACLU is helpful for all fields of study, but especially political science, pre-law, history, sociology, psychology, social work and journalism.
