June 2000 Case of the Month
Race Discrimination in Glades County Elections:
Thompson et al. v. Glades County
Board of County Commissioners
In order to help bring a better understanding of the Bill of Rights in action, the ACLU of Florida has initiated the Case of the Month. Each month, we will highlight either a current case before the courts or past landmark decisions. In discussing the case, we hope to offer extensive learning materials, including balanced information on the key legal issues in the lawsuit, the attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants involved, lesson plans, teacher handouts and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's).
For June, we have selected a case challenging Glades County's at-large system of elections -- a system that effectively dilutes the votes of its minority African-American population.
The Case of the Month is designed to be a resource tool for teachers and students, as well as a good way for the general public to keep informed about some of our hottest cases of the moment..
