August 2000 Case of the Month
Free Speech and Private Property Rights in Panama City: The State of Florida v. Kevin E. Wood
In order to help bring a better understanding of the Bill of Rights in action, the ACLU of Florida website posts a Case of the Month. Each month, we highlight either a current case before the courts or past landmark decisions. In discussing the case, we hope to offer extensive learning materials, including balanced information on the key legal issues in the lawsuit, the attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants involved, lesson plans, teacher handouts and Frequently Asked Questions.
The Case of the Month is designed to be a resource tool for teachers and students, as well as an opportunity for the general public to keep informed about important civil liberties issues.
For August, we have selected a case that deals with the general issues of free speech and private property rights. It challenges ? on state and federal constitutional free speech grounds ? a criminal trespass charge for soliciting and conversing with voters in the Panama City Mall.
