April 2000 Case of the Month

Miami's Cuba Ordinance: Miami Light Project et al. v. Miami-Dade County

In order to help bring a better understanding of the Bill of Rights in action, the ACLU of Florida has initiated the Case of the Month.  Each month, we will highlight either a current case before the courts or past landmark decisions.  In discussing the case, we hope to offer extensive learning materials, including balanced information on the key legal issues in the lawsuit, the attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants involved, lesson plans, teacher handouts and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's).

For April, we have selected a case challenging a Miami-Dade County resolution that bans county vendors from doing business with any company or organization that deals with Cuba, including non-profit and for-profit organizations who wish to offer educational, cultural, artistic, musical, balletic, dramatic, symphonic, operatic, cinematic or other cultural events involving, directly or indirectly, Cuban nationals, but are prohibited from doing so, or are penalized by the County for doing so, solely because of the Miami-Dade County Cuba restrictions.

The Case of the Month is designed to be a resource tool for teachers and students, as well as a good way for the general public to keep informed about some of our hottest cases of the moment.
