Sample Letter to the Editor of your Local Newspaper on Racial Profiling

Dear Editor:

As a concerned resident of (city or county name), I am writing about the problem of racial profiling. According to emerging national statistics, this problem affects a large percentage of minorities in the United States. The practice of racial profiling is discriminatory and violates the civil rights of those who are profiled.

The Florida Highway Patrol ("FHP")is voluntarily collecting racial data at all police stops of citizens. While this is a good first step, our local police (or sheriffs) department needs to follow the FHP's example. The voluntary collection of such information would benefit police departments by providing them with concrete data with which to respond to allegations of racial profiling. Moreover, collecting and analyzing such data would increase the level of public confidence in our law enforcement.

I will be watching our local officials to make sure that they work toward solving the problem of racial profiling.
