ACLU Applauds U.S. Appeals Court Decision in Florida Voting Ban Case
MIAMI ? The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has just announced a decision in Johnson v. Bush, the case that seeks to restore voting rights to more than 600,000 people in the state of Florida. In a 2-1 vote, the federal appeals court reversed an earlier decision upholding the state?s voting ban for people with prior felony convictions.
?We applaud the court for recognizing that the challenge to Florida?s voting ban deserves its day in court, ? said ACLU of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon. ?The mass disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of Florida citizens is the overriding civil rights crisis in our state, and we look to the courts to end this shameful inj ustice,?
