The Life of David Gale Screening and Death Penalty Discussion at AMC Sunset Place Rescheduled for Tuesday, July 29

July 22, 2003

MIAMI - The special screening of the dramatic thriller The Life of David Gale at AMC Sunset Place has been rescheduled for July 29. The Life of David Gale, starring Kevin Spacey, from Universal Pictures and Internedia Films, is a drama about a devoted father, popular professor and respected death penalty opponent who finds himself on Death Row for the rape and murder of fellow activist Constance Harraway.  The movie screening, sponsored by the ACLU's Greater Miami Chapter, HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED.

The event will be at 7 p.m. July 29 at AMC Sunset Place 24, 5701 Sunset Dr., in South Miami. Tickets are $5. (One non-ACLU member who attends as a guest of a current ACLU member can attend for free). Reservations are required. Seating is limited. To RSVP, call 305-576-2337 ext. 16.

Following the presentation of the movie, there will be a discussion on Florida's death penalty system featuring Abe Bonowitz, Director of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, a national non-profit organization that promotes positive dialog regarding capital punishment and invigorated tactical grassroots activism by the global death penalty abolition movement. Bonowitz, who served as a consultant for The Life of David Gale , has been working to educate the public about human rights problems, especially about the need for alternatives to the death penalty, for more than 12 years.

With 23 innocent defendants released from Death Row since 1973, Florida leads the nation with the largest number of people released by the court due to exonerating DNA evidence, prosecutorial misconduct or other evidence to clear the defendants subsequent to conviction. (That figure is according to the Death Penalty Information Center based in Washington D.C. Some Florida experts on the death penalty, including representatives from Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, count 25 exonerated prisoners in Florida, including Sunny Jacobs and Joe Spaziano).

The movie screening, sponsored by the Greater Miami Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, will be at 7 p.m. July 29 at AMC Sunset Place 24, 5701 Sunset Dr., in South Miami. Tickets are $5. (One non-ACLU member who attends as a guest of a current ACLU member can attend for free). Reservations are required. To RSVP, call 305-576-2337 ext. 16.
