MIAMI ? Three local high school students will test their knowledge of the U.S Constitution and Bill of Rights during a live televised quiz show that airs Wednesday on Freedom's Watchdog ? the weekly television show produced by the ACLU of Florida on WLRN's Cable TAP Community Channel 36.
Dubbed the Liberty Challenge, the student quiz show will air from 3 to 4 p.m. September 25 on WLRN's Community Channel 36. The WLRN studio is located at 172 NE 15th St.
Using flashing buzzers, students will answer basic questions about the inalienable rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights like freedom of expression, religious liberty and equality. They'll battle it out for a $100 grand prize that includes an ACLU membership and cap. The second place winner get $75, third takes home $50.
The Liberty Challenge contestants are: Becky Farber, 14, a freshman at Palmetto High School, Vanessa Dubois, 17, a senior at Braddock Senior High School and Carlos Suarez, 15, a sophomore at South Miami Senior High.
"The U.S. Constitution isn't exactly fun and easy learning for most students, but there definitely won't be any snoozing during the Liberty Challenge," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, Communications Director of the ACLU of Florida. "They'll have fun battling over the Bill of Rights while learning about important ideals that are relevant to them as well as adults."
The September 25 edition of Freedom's Watchdog is the final show in the ACLU's six-month television series that debuted in April and included 26 shows. It will repeat at 6 p.m. on Sunday on Cable-TAP's Community Channel 36. The Community Channel is seen on Channel 36 except for 24 on Miami TCI, 15 on Media One, 55 on Strategic Technology, and 31 on TCI North/South.
The ACLU's educational series is airing under the auspices of the Miami-Dade County Cable Television Access Project (Cable-TAP), a joint venture of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade County government, and WLRN. Together they operate the largest cable system in the country, interconnecting to almost 500,000 homes in Miami-Dade County.
