ACLU Letter to Dade Fire Chief Requests Additional Information on
Fire-Fighter Suspensions
September 26, 2001
MIAMI -- In a letter sent today to the Miami-Dade Fire Chief, the Greater Miami Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) requested information regarding the suspensions of two Miami-Dade fire fighters who reportedly objected to displaying a flag on a fire truck.
According to news reports, Miami-Dade firefighters Jim Moore and Terry Williams objected to climbing aboard a fire truck that sported a large American flag. In response to the incident, Fire Chief Dave Paulison issued a memo ordering all county fire engines to carry the American flag "as a symbol of unity."
The fire fighters were later suspended, causing several community organizations to voice concerns over the county's response to the incident.
Upon being approached by the community groups, the ACLU wrote a letter to Miami-Dade Fire Chief R. David Paulison. The letter asks the chief to provide details about the incident and to give additional information on the memorandum directing all county fire fighters to place an American flag on the fire trucks.
