Palm Beach County Commissioners Declare December 15 "Bill of Rights"
Day
December 4, 2000
The Palm Beach Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida will receive a Proclamation on Tuesday, December 5th, from the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County declaring December 15 to be Bill of Rights Day.
The Proclamation, sponsored by newly elected County Commissioner Addie Greene and signed by County Commissioners today, recognizes the freedoms and protections expressed in the Bill of Rights, originally ratified on December 15, 1791, to protect individuals from government abuse and guarantee freedom of religion; freedom of speech, press, petition and assembly; privacy; and due process of law.
The County Commission will present the Proclamation to Ruth Gottlieb, Chair of the Palm Beach Chapter of the ACLU, at the commission meeting at 9:30 a.m. December 5 in County Commission Chambers on the sixth floor of the Government Center, 301 North Olive Avenue, in West Palm Beach.
"I want to thank the Commission for taking the time to recognize and reaffirm its commitment to the Bill of Rights," said Gottlieb. "The Bill of Rights has application every day for citizens and reflects the most enduring values of a free and democratic society."
The mission of the ACLU is to preserve and protect the principles of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. The ACLU is freedom's watchdog, working daily in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend these rights. The ACLU is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, working in the courts, Congress and the legislatures to defend and expand civil rights and civil liberties.
