We're Winning! Keep Up the Pressure on Total Information Awareness!

In recent weeks, tens of thousands of ACLU activists have sent letters opposing the Pentagon's Total Information Awareness program - a data collection and surveillance system that would effectively provide government officials with immediate access to our most personal information. Responding to that pressure and to critical media coverage, the Senate unanimously adopted a measure that would begin to limit the Total Information Awareness program.

We are writing to ask that you take the unusual step of writing once again to your Members of Congress on this program. Our suggested letter to Congress this time focuses on an amendment to the Omnibus Appropriations bill for 2003 sponsored by Senator Wyden to limit the Total Information Awareness (TIA) program. In the next two weeks, Senate and House Members are negotiating the final text for this Omnibus Appropriations bill. It is critical that Congress take action to stop the invasive TIA program.

Further legislative action and congressional oversight will be necessary to put a complete stop to the development and implementation of TIA, but the Wyden amendment as passed by the Senate is a critical first step to protecting the civil liberties and privacy of innocent people inside the United States.

Take Action! We have TIA on the ropes! Urge Members of Congress to retain the Wyden amendment. Click here to get more information and to send a free fax.
