** BREVARD CHAPTER **

The ACLU of Florida is a private, non-profit, non-partisan, membership organization working in our courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve our individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Our Brevard Chapter shares an office with the ACLU of Florida's Brevard Regional Office at 905 East New Haven Ave. in Melbourne.  The office is open from 10am - 5 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  The phone number is (321) 768-6262.

Kevin Aplin, Brevard Chapter Vice Chair, oversees the activities of the Brevard Regional Office.

In addition to the Chapter activities dedicated to supporting individual rights and freedoms, the Brevard Regional Office will also serve the county through community outreach and public education, especially in the areas of free speech, police misconduct, and civil and voting rights restoration for people with past felony convictions.  Specifically it will focus on the following issues:

* Improving conditions of confinement at the Brevard County jail, including working to establish a Citizen Review Baord of the Brevard Sheriff and the jail.

* Serving as a clearinghouse for petition gatherers working to collect signatures for the proposed constitutional amendment that would automatically restore the civil and voting rights fo former felons.

* Ending surveillance of protesters' political activities by the Melbourne Police Department and Brevard County Sheriff's Office.
