Escambia Police Shootings
September 2003 Edition of the ACLU of Florida Newsletter
Since 1994, there have been 14 fatal deputy-involved shootings by Escambia Sheriff's Deputies.
Here is a partial list of the shootings:
- June 26,2003: David Lewandowski, 26, was shot by deputies after he behaved erratically in a convenience store.
- June 16, 2003: Lathern Broughton, 64, was shot after deputies raided his home.
- May 20, 2001: Michael Paul Robb, 57, was shot by deputies after he refused to drop a knife during an altercation with another man.
- Oct. 12, 2000: Gregory Kidd is killed by police after shooting a police dog and another officer.
- July 22, 2000: David Chaussee, 31, is killed by police after he rams a patrol car.
- June 8, 2000: A sheriff kills Otto Fitts, 33, as he holds another sheriff at gunpoint inside the Escambia Jail.
- Oct. 29, 1999: A deputy kills Marvin Hudson, 20, as he runs from an undercover drug sale.
- Dec. 19, 1998: A deputy kills Timothy Jirgens, 47, as he steps out of a hotel room waving a gun.
- May 14, 1998: A deputy shoots and kills Jerry Campbell as he runs through a neighborhood after robbing an elderly gentleman in his home.
- June 15, 1997: A police lieutenant shoots and kills a 19-year-old man after he tries to run over the officer with a car on Pensacola Beach.
- May 20, 1996: A deputy shoots and kills a 36-year-old man after he grabs the officer's flashlight and swings it at him. The officer shot him in the chest.
