"In Memoriam ? Margo Yazell"

By Winifred Foster

Margo Yazell of St. Petersburg, a stalwart civil libertarian and active board member of the Pinellas County Chapter of the ACLU, died at age 83 on Nov. 11, 2001.  Margo and her husband Ray, who died in 1995, both served the Pinellas Chapter in several positions since the early 70's.

They also were on the Florida Affiliate Board and served in Miami for some months as interim executive directors.  They received the Nelson Poynter Civil Libertarian Award from the Florida Foundation in 1993.

Margo was widely recognized as the editor of "ComeUnity", an alternative paper providing aid and comfort to community activists in peace and social justice arenas.  Margo also organized an ACLU court watch project that had immediate and noticeable effect on courtroom procedures.
