"ACLU of Florida hosts 12 cable access shows"

By Alessandra Soler
Editor /Public Education Director

There is no doubt that most people have heard of the ACLU, yet many may have misconceptions about what we do and why. In hopes of educating the community on the ACLU's mission and activities, the ACLU of Florida is producing twelve half-hour shows on civil liberties issues that impact South Florida, including voting rights, racial profiling, immigration, felony disenfranchisement and juvenile offender laws. The shows will air starting March 5 on WLRN's Cable-Tap Channels (36 and 37) in Miami-Dade County, FL.

The shows will be produced by ACLU of Florida staff, board members and supporters in English, Spanish and Kreyol. Fred Seraphin, a Miami-Dade County public defender and local ACLU supporter will help produce and host two shows in Kreyol on immigration and criminal justice issues that are of importance to the Haitian-American community in South Florida. Plans also are underway to produce shows in Spanish on First Amendment issues that have recently been the subject of controversy in Miami.

All shows will air at 9 a.m. Tuesdays, 2 p.m. Wednesdays, and 7 p.m. Thursdays in March, April and May. Taping begins at the end of February for shows aired in March. (Shows aired in April will be taped at the end of March; those airing in May will be taped at the end of April.)

If you know someone in the South Florida area who would be a suitable guest on the show, please call Alessandra Soler at (305) 576-2337 ext. 16.
