Chapter Happenings October 2000

Palm Beach Chapter: The 2000 Harriette Glasner Freedom Award will be presented to attorney Frank Kreidler at the chapter's annual dinner at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Atlantis Country Club, 190 Atlantis Blvd. The cocktail reception will be at 6:45 p.m. Media personality Jack Cole will be the guest speaker. Treasure Coast: There will be a roundtable discussion from 5:30 to 7p.m. Nov. 2 at the Indian River County's Main Library, 1600 21st St., in Vero Beach. ACLU of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon will be the guest speaker. The program, which is free and open to the public, will focus on current challenges to civil liberties. Call T.A. Wyner at (561) 465-5658. To boost membership, the group also created 30-second PSAs summarizing each of the amendments to the Bill of Rights. The dramatic radio spots, recorded by Sister Catherine Cassidy of the chapter's Legal Screening Panel, are played during the day on WQCS, 88.9 FM.

Pinellas: The chapter's annual meeting and dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Banquet Masters II, 6152 126 Ave., North Largo. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m. and Board elections will be at 7 p.m. The annual Gardner Beckett Civil Liberties Award will be presented to Pinellas school board member Linda Lerner. St. Petersburg Times political cartoonist Don Addis will receive the Vigilance in Journalism Award. Tickets are $25 for individuals, $45 for couples, and $15 for students or lowincome. Call Irene Miller at 7273270308. The annual community fair, Circus McGurkus, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28, at Lakeview Park, 20th St. and 28th Ave., South. The chapter's Banned Book Marathon at the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 & 12 at Eckerd College, 4200 54th Ave., South.

Panhandle: A newly-forming Panhandle chapter including Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton Counties will have its first general membership meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Washington High School, 6000 College Parkway. Legislative Staff Counsel Larry Spalding will be the guest speaker. The chapter meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month in Room 225 of Washington High School, 6000 College Parkway, Pensacola. Tampa: The annual meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the USF Club on the fourth floor of the Marshall (University) Center in Tampa. ACLU of Florida Legal Director Randall C.
