Noted Journalism Professor James W. Carey to Keynote Nelson Poynter Dinner

James W. Carey, CBS Professor of International Journalism at Columbia University, will be the Keynote Speaker at the ACLU Foundation of Florida's 1998 Nelson Poynter Award Dinner. For many years, he has been the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Poynter Institute of Media Studies.

"The ACLU of Florida is honored that James Carey, of the Columbia University School of Journalism, has agreed to speak at the upcoming Nelson Poynter Award Banquet in St. Petersburg," said ACLU Foundation of Florida President Ray Arsenault.

"One of the nation's most eminent media scholars, Carey has helped to redefine the proper role of mass media in a democratic society. In his groundbreaking 1989 book, Communication as Culture, he offers an eloquent discourse on the difficulty of achieving and sustaining a free society in an age of mass culture," ACLU President Arsenault added.

From 1979 to 1992 Professor Carey was Dean of the College of Communications at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Prior to that, he held the George H. Gallup Chair at the University of Iowa.

Professor Carey has held a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in Science, Technology and Human Values. He is also one of 20 elected fellows of the International Communications Association, and he was the National President of the Association for Education in Journalism and President of the American Association of Schools and Departments of Journalism. Currently he serves on the National Advisory Board for the Peabody Awards.

In addition to over 100 essays, monographs and reviews, he has published two books: Media, Myth and Narratives: Televison and the Press and Communication as Culture. A new book, James Carey: A Critical Reader, was recently issued, edited by Catherine Warren and Eve Munson. He has lectured at over 75 universities in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

"I hope everyone will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to honor Andrew Barnes and to hear Professor Carey, a stimulating speaker on the role of the media in a democracy a topic of great urgency right now," noted ACLU President Arsenault.
